Heating Repairs That Could Be Needed When Your Heat Pump Develops Problems In The Winter

Jessica Jimenez

A heat pump cools your house in the summer and then switches to heat your home in the winter. It gets a lot of work throughout the year, but if you maintain the equipment well, you can avoid breakdowns. However, problems might arise now and then, and when your heat pump isn't working properly, it's important to have repairs done promptly. Here are some heating repairs the pump might need if it stops working in the winter.

Plug A Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is needed to heat your home in the winter. If a copper refrigerant line develops a leak, the heating repair technician has to hunt for the leak and then repair it so the refrigerant can be filled to the proper pressure. The lines that hold the refrigerant have to be kept clean too.

If a refrigerant line or coil is coated in dust, the refrigerant won't be able to work as well. It's important to have the refrigerant system checked by a professional to make sure the lines are clean and that there are no leaks, as the refrigerant system needs to be in good shape to create cool air in the summer and heat in the winter.

Replace The Reversing Valve

The reversing valve is a critical part of a heat pump that allows warm air to blow into your house in the winter. The valve reverses airflow so warm air created by the equipment blows outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter. The valve also has to activate periodically during normal operation to defrost the equipment. Otherwise, ice could build up on the refrigerant coil and keep the heat pump from working. When the reversing valve is bad, the heating repair technician has to replace it.

Seal A Leaky Duct

If you have a ductless heat pump system, then you won't have to worry about ducts leaking warm air. However, some heat pumps use ducts to distribute heat throughout your home. If a duct has a tear or open seam, warm air leaks out and is lost in your attic. This affects how much warm air reaches your living space. Your heat pump might operate properly, but you'll still be chilly. Fixing a leaky duct is a fairly easy heating repair that you might even be able to handle by yourself.

Fix A Bad Blower

If you have a mini-split heat pump system, you may have blowers on the walls of each of your rooms. If a blower goes bad, the room won't stay warm. The heating repair technician has to determine if the thermostat or the blower is to blame for the problem and then make repairs that are needed so the blower puts out a steady stream of warm air again.
