Why Aren't Your Heating Vents Blowing Any Air?

Jessica Jimenez

When you turn your heat on or crank the thermostat setting up, you expect warm air to come out of the vents. So, what if it doesn't? What if you hear your furnace kick on, but then nothing comes from the vents? Something is definitely amiss. Take a look at some common reasons why your vents aren't blowing warm air.

The Blower Motor Is Broken

Your furnace has two major components. There is the burner, which burns natural gas and generates heat. Then, there's the blower or central fan. This part pushes air through the furnace, where it is warmed before continuing on through the ducts. If your central fan motor breaks, then your furnace burner will still turn on. However, no air will blow through the furnace to spread that heat. So, the burner will soon overheat, which will trigger a limit switch that causes the furnace to turn off again.

The good news is that a furnace replacement contractor can replace a blower motor. However, this is a major repair, and if your furnace is already quite old, it may not be worth making the repair. Simply replacing the furnace may be the better option.

Your Thermostat Wiring Is Broken

It's possible that the connection between your thermostat and central fan is broken. A wire may have been chewed by a rodent. Or, a wire may have been jostled loose from a connection as the result of an earthquake or strong winds. As such, the thermostat may not be telling the central fan to turn on, even though it is telling the furnace to heat up.

An HVAC contractor can look over the thermostat connections and replace any wires that are damaged or unhooked. If any of the damage is internal to the thermostat, they may need to replace your thermostat.

There's An Obstruction

Another possibility is that there is an obstruction in your ducts blocking the flow of air. Usually when this is the case, air will come through some vents but not others. However, an obstruction in the main duct could cause all vents to lose airflow. An HVAC tech can send a camera into your ducts to locate any obstructions. They can then use a special grabber tool to pull the obstruction out of the duct.

If there is no warm air coming out of your vents, call your HVAC contractor. There is almost always a clear reason for this, and professionals can make the necessary repairs. For more information on heating services, contact a professional near you.
